ARCH1101 Introduction Exercise

(Part of a musical composition I made during high-school)

Generally when people think of music, they think of hearing something pleasant - they expect harmony. However, I focused on the aspect of dissonance when composing this piece of music, trying to convey the theme of a disaster through this piece. Interestingly, composing music has certain similarities with architecture (designing a building). In music, there is the concern whether the part we've written is playable by a musician, just like certain designs of a building may need to change due to them not being possible to remain stable and safe. This was a major concern for me when I was composing as some of the musical effects (chords, transition of notes, etc.) I was trying to achieve proved to be difficult for musicians to perform, thus forcing me to consider different ways to achieve a similar result.

(Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavik, Iceland)

The theme of brightness is incorporated into this building, allowing it to constantly attract people's attention at the harbour, whether it is day or night. During day, the concert hall shines brightly under the sunshine due to its mostly glass exterior. The LED lights on the exterior also lets the building shine through the darkness of the night. The geometric and angular shape of the building as well as the light (either reflected through sunlight or through its own LED) make the building seem like a gem when seen from afar. The building's association with brightness creates a positive connotation towards the building's purpose - which is music, a type of fine art.

Aurora Borealis Over Honeymoon Rock | Gaylord Nelson Wilderness, Wisconsin

(Aurora Borealis Over Honeymoon Rock (Apostle Islands) in Lake Superior by Jeff Rennicke)

According to the photographer, the aurora in this photograph only lasted for 30 seconds, which is quite short when compared to their normal time span (lasting around 10 minutes). It was pure coincidence that he captured this view during such a short time window. The unique green hue in the whole photo makes the island look like a piece of gold floating on top of the lake's surface, complimenting the strands of orange in the sky. This photo offers a different perspective on this specific rock, which has been photographed numerous times, which makes this seem like a completely different location than the usual Apostle Islands.
